Film Industry Has a Huge Role for Designers
My career in drama and my passion in design; as well as the film industry; all started while I was in college. It was a bit though because since I was a young girl; I really loved acting and would usually participate in various drama roles in the community. These ranged for Christmas shows to youth artistic developmental programs. I usually was hailed as a good actor. But I never contemplated much about my gift because I had other ambitions in life. I wanted to study Law and probably become an environmental advocate.
In 2011, I secured a place to study law in college
I was glad that at last I would be achieving my dreams. With that said, I was prepared to work as hard as it took to make the best as a law student. However that never came to be. I never graduated in law.
My plans were thwarted when I was in my second year of study. At that time, I had been stalking on a handsome boy who was pursuing a degree in creative arts in the film industry. He loved acting and I always went to see him perform in various friends. It’s very sad that I never had the guts to approach him and let him know how I was feeling; I always wanted to.
My ‘prince charming’ drove me backing to the drama scene; which I had abandoned for a few years. I joined the school drama team just to be near him. It was later after joining that I realized that he already had a girlfriend. I had to respect their relationships. Bit that decision; wasn’t about to come to fats. I wanted him to recognize my presence. Hence, why I stuck with the team.
The choice of good designs in the film industry require a lot of creativity
There was a lot to learn about theaters and the elements; which result in a good theatrical performance than I initially knew. Drama in college presented new challenges; as well as opportunities that really changed my life; and entirely my dreams. One of the opportunities; which I learned and fell in love with was the use of props for display. Props are mostly used to change the set up of the drama arena or production. For instance, when acting an old-time show, it is of importance to use vintage recreations to depict the scenario of old time.
I had seen a couple of these displays in several drama shows that I had attended; as well as in old movies. But I had never been privileged to use them. Not that I was part of a team which was acting professionally; I had the opportunity to use them. As a matter of facts, most of the time, I was assigned the role of coming up with unique and creative props to use in the various shows that we were staging.
At first, I may not have liked the idea
This was because I felt that the role wasn’t adequate and was much stressful. But I realized that most of the audience resonated well with the props used in conveying a message; as much as they did to the entire drama sessions. Yet again, most of the times I was given the creative freedom to choose the appropriate props. Though at times under guidelines; which would be used for various drama shows.
This made me realize the creative side of me. I loved the space and the freedom to make the necessary choices and this made me realize that graphics is my passion. There were times that I would spend hour in the evening brainstorming the most creative props to use in a certain setting or show and usually; the group applauded me for my choice. I realized that I had a Midas touch in graphics. I decided to pursue a short course in graphic design; as well as the film industry; to gain more knowledge.
By the end of my second year doing law; I could tell that law was not my thing. It was time for me to pursue what I felt fulfilling enough. Thus I quit law and instead continued with graphic design in the film industry; before venturing into film production. Today, I usually work as a designer in various films/show productions. Setting props is still a part of me and from time to time; I usually work in designing and setting up props for various shows.
